How Elementary Students Learn Math and What Instructional Shifts are Necessary for Math Intervention

As our understanding of how a child’s brain grows and learns mathematics, so does our understanding of how our instructional approaches need to shift. How we teach math intervention for elementary children is an incredibly important shift happening in math education. In this session, we will examine the critical components of math interventions and how the ‘traditional’ approaches don’t always align with current learning about the brain. But what it does tell us is fascinating and this new learning creates a real shift in our approaches to math intervention. You will walk away with practical tools and strategies you can implement right away.

How Secondary Students Learn Math and What Instructional Shifts are Necessary for Math Intervention

As our understanding of how a student’s brain grows and learns mathematics, so does our understanding of how our instructional approaches need to shift. How we teach math intervention for middle school and high school students is an incredibly important shift happening in math education. In this session, we will examine the critical components of math interventions and how the ‘traditional’ approaches don’t always align with current learning about the brain. But what it does tell us is fascinating and this new learning creates a real shift in our approaches to math intervention. Designing Impactful and Meaningful Tier 1 Instruction in Math that Meets the Needs of All Students

Tier 1 instruction can be defined as Surface, Deep and Transfer Learning as touted by John Hattie in his Visible Learning work. This leveled approach to instruction and assessment shifts our approach to Tier 1 instruction in a way that encourages students to master ONLY what needs to be mastered, while acquiring a deep learning for other identified standards. Not all standards are created equal, yet we often teach them and assess them at the same level. This shift in thinking about Tier 1 instruction will allow you to breathe in your instruction by giving you the space and time to teach mastery for all students. You will leave with an understanding of how to adjust your instructional approach and the tools to support the shift.

Scaffolding Math Tasks to Maintain Cognitive Demand for All Students

How do we take a great math task and modify it to fit the needs of all students in the classroom? In this session, we will dig into techniques you can use to scaffold and differentiate a math task to meet the needs of all students while still maintaining the cognitive demand and engagement appropriate for the aligned standard. We will also explore strategies like ‘visibly random groups’ and ‘prompts and cues’ to provide just the right amount of support to your students. You will leave with the tools and skills to begin scaffolding immediately.
